Front-end clunk: subframe nuts, anti-roll bar bushes and upper ball joints

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME 1–4 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

A loud bang from the front when turning or reversing, wandering steering or clunks over bumps.

The fix, step by step

  1. Growlerbearnz calls it 'the classic L300 clunk' and lists two usual causes.
  2. First, the 17 mm nuts holding the rear suspension subframe to the chassis rails work loose, and they should be very tight.
  3. Second, the anti-roll bar bushes wear.
  4. Then check the upper and lower ball joints, tie-rod ends, CV play, shock bushes and wishbone bushes.
  5. To change an upper ball joint, support the van, back the 24 mm castellated nut off a few turns, break the taper, then remove the three bolts on top of the upper arm.
  6. One member gives the OEM upper joint as MR241623.
  7. With ball-joint lift spacers, fit a long straight grease nipple.
