Glow plugs and the 'super-quick glow' controller

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME 1–3 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Hard cold starts, a long crank before it fires, or an engine that cranks but won't start at all. A loose wire at the glow-plug bus bar or a burned trace inside the controller can stop everything.

The fix, step by step

  1. The controller learns how hot the plugs are by measuring their resistance and runs 6 V plugs on a 12 V system through two relays.
  2. That's why generic 6 V plugs (often CP-06 types) don't work with it.
  3. Delica.ca members fit Mitsubishi MD092392 or NGK 2161.
  4. Check the bus-bar connection first.
  5. On right-hand-drive vans the controller sits in the driver's-side B-pillar behind the seat-belt reel.
  6. One owner found a burned trace to the relay and bridged it with wire.
  7. Don't keep cranking a no-start engine to warm it up: that overheats the glow relay and controller.
