Symptoms
Due at the transfer-case interval in the maintenance chart for dusty roads or towing; first change is a common break-in item.
The fix, step by step
- Crack the fill plug, then drain.
- Refill with Toyota Transfer Gear Oil LF to 0–5 mm below the bottom lip of the fill hole — about 1.2 qt (part-time) or 1.5 qt (full-time) — wait five minutes and recheck.
- Plugs 27 ft-lb with new washers.
- Don't swap diff oil and transfer fluid; Red Line MT-LV 70W/75W is the aftermarket alternative cited for part-time gas trucks.
