“Toyota finally replaced the V6, the five-speed and the 2009 dashboard — and somehow kept the roll-down rear window and the attitude. Quicker, smarter and far nicer to live with; whether a turbo four and a hybrid will rack up 300,000 miles like the old truck is the one test it hasn't sat yet.”

PART 01

Overview

Where it came from, why it matters, and how it changed year to year.

The story

After fifteen model years of the 5th gen, Toyota revealed its replacement on 9 April 2024 and started building it at Tahara, Japan, that December — later than planned, because parts shared with other models were in short supply. The N500 rides on the TNGA-F (GA-F) ladder frame that also underpins the Tacoma, the Land Cruiser 250 and the Lexus GX 550. It swaps the old 4.0 V6 for a 2.4-litre turbo four, offers a hybrid for the first time, and still lowers its rear glass into the tailgate at the touch of a button.

THE TACOMA WITH A ROOF

Car and Driver put it bluntly: the new 4Runner is "essentially an SUV version of the Tacoma," sharing its mechanicals, cabin switchgear and much of its styling. The wheelbase grows 2.4 inches to 112.2, matching the Land Cruiser and GX 550, and most of that stretch went in ahead of the front doors to free up space around the body mounts. That is why TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter trucks can leave the factory on 33-inch tires — something 5th gen owners did with a grinder.

There are nine trims: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter. KDSS, the hydraulically linked anti-roll bars of the old truck, is gone. In its place the TRD Pro and Trailhunter get an electronically disconnecting front anti-roll bar, optional on the TRD Off-Road. Those three trims also get an electronic rear locker; the rest make do with a limited-slip rear differential.

FOUR CYLINDERS, EIGHT GEARS, ONE BATTERY

Every 6th gen uses the T24A-FTS 2.4-litre turbo four and an eight-speed automatic. In i-FORCE form it makes 278 hp and 317 lb-ft, with peak torque at 1,700 rpm against the old V6's 4,400. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid sandwiches a 48-hp motor between engine and gearbox for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft; it is standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum and optional on the TRD Off-Road and Limited. Towing rises from 5,000 lb to 6,000 lb with either.

Car and Driver's numbers are good rather than transformative: 7.5 seconds to 60 mph for a gas 4WD truck and 6.7 for a hybrid Trailhunter, against 7.7 for the last V6 TRD Pro it tested. EPA ratings climb to 21–22 mpg combined for the gas truck and 23 for the hybrid, though C/D's heavy Trailhunter managed only 17 mpg observed. The same test noted transmission temperatures 'flirting with the red zone' after repeated acceleration runs — an observation 6th gen forum owners have echoed on long off-road climbs.

TRD PRO VERSUS TRAILHUNTER

The two flagships split the off-road mission. The TRD Pro runs manually adjustable 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass dampers (C/D's reveal identified them as QS3s), forged-aluminium upper control arms, a TRD intake and a cat-back exhaust — tuned, like the Tacoma's, for fast desert running. The Trailhunter is the overlander: ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch dampers with rear remote reservoirs, an ARB-designed roof rack, steel skid plates, an onboard compressor in production form, and 10.1 inches of ground clearance against at least 8.1 on lesser trims.

Both wear 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T III tires in 265/70R18 and list at $68,350 in Car and Driver's 2025 pricing, against $42,220 for a base SR5. That puts the top trims uncomfortably close to the Land Cruiser 250 and GX 550; C/D's own pick was the $50,640 TRD Off-Road 4WD. Toyota sold 98,805 4Runners in the US in 2025, so the formula clearly still works, and for 2026 Car and Driver reports no major changes.

SIDEBAR · TRAILHUNTER

Toyota hires ARB

The Trailhunter is Toyota admitting what owners have done for decades: bolting Australian overland kit to a 4Runner. It comes with ARB's Old Man Emu dampers, an ARB-designed roof rack, raised clearance (2 inches front, 1.5 inches rear per Wikipedia), heritage 'TOYOTA' grille lettering, a 20-inch LED light bar and colour-selectable fog lights.

Its most talked-about feature is the tall intake on the passenger-side A-pillar. Car and Driver stresses it is not a snorkel — the point is cleaner, dust-free air, not deep wading — and that it pipes a constant chorus of turbo whooshes into the cabin while trimming 3 hp, leaving the Trailhunter at 323 combined horsepower.

How it’s built

Mechanically the N500 is a TNGA-F truck: a new ladder frame shared with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser 250 and GX 550, double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink live rear axle, with geometry reworked from the old J150-era layout. The drivetrain menu spans rear-drive, part-time 4WD with low range, and full-time 4WD with a locking centre differential, while the off-road trims trade KDSS for an electronic front anti-roll-bar disconnect.

Buying one

What to pay, what to check, and how to tell a good one from a clone.

What they cost

New-car pricing. The hybrid-only TRD Pro and Trailhunter sit at the top, and there's no meaningful used market yet.

2026 i-Force (gas), SR5 to top trim$43,865–60,495
2026 i-Force Max hybrid$55,085–70,195

MSRP ranges from Car and Driver's 2026 4Runner and 4Runner Hybrid pages, excluding destination and options. Prices move; checked October 2026. See live listings below.

What to check before you buy

  1. 01
Hybrid or not?The hybrid is mandatory on TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum and a $2,800 option elsewhere (C/D). It brings torque and 23 mpg combined but also weight, a higher cargo floor and no third row. C/D's first drive would skip it; its Tacoma tests found the non-hybrid quicker.
  2. 02
Know which trims have whatOnly the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter have the electronic rear locker; the front anti-roll-bar disconnect is standard on Pro and Trailhunter and optional on the TRD Off-Road. Check the window sticker rather than the badge.
  3. 03
Transmission temperaturesCar and Driver saw transmission temps near the red zone during repeated acceleration runs, and forum owners report warnings on long off-road climbs. On a test drive with grades, watch the transmission temperature display; owners suggest 4Lo or holding lower gears in S mode.
  4. 04
Brake squeal TSBFront brakes that squeal in reverse are covered by Toyota TSB T-SB-0046-25, since superseded by T-SB-0006-26, which replaces pads, shims and fitting kit under the 36-month/36,000-mile warranty. Ask whether it has been done.
  5. 05
Steering clunkSome early owners on 4Runner6G.com report a clunk felt through the wheel and brake pedal that Toyota fixed under warranty with a new steering shaft assembly. Drive over broken pavement and feel for it.
  6. 06
Water where it shouldn't beOwners have found water collecting inside the liftgate, cured by removing plugs from its weep holes, and threads report water dripping from the rear doors and mildew in window mouldings. Open the liftgate after rain or a wash.
  7. 07
Recalls and campaignsRun the VIN at NHTSA: 2025 trucks are in an instrument-panel software recall (25V-595), several 2026 trucks in load-capacity label recalls (26V-571, 26V-282), and owners have received a front air-dam hardware campaign letter.
  8. 08
RangeForum owners complain of roughly 280 miles between fill-ups in mixed use. If you tow or roam far from fuel, plan for a jerry can — an aftermarket long-range tank wasn't confirmed for the 4Runner in that thread.

Spotting the real thing

Nine trims share a body, so drivetrain and off-road hardware are what separate a $44k truck from a $70k one.

A 6th gen is new enough that 'baseline' mostly means confirming the dealer did what the warranty schedule asks and catching up the severe-service items Toyota lists for dusty roads, towing and roof loads. Check that the front-brake squeal TSB (now T-SB-0006-26) and any campaigns are closed out, then do the driveline fluids if the truck has seen dirt.

Toyota 4Runner 6th Gen questions, answered

What's the biggest tire I can fit without a lift?

TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter trucks already run 33-inch tires (265/70R18) from the factory. SR5 owners on 4Runner6G.com report 285/70R17 (about 33 in) on stock height without rubbing, though they argue about whether the stock 17×7 wheel is too narrow for that tire; one owner saw the tread balloon and moved to 8.5-in-wide wheels.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER / 4RUNNER6G.COM
Should I get the hybrid?

It's the only choice on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum. Elsewhere, Car and Driver says the extra cost isn't worth it: the gas truck is lighter, keeps the optional third row and is rated 21–22 mpg combined against the hybrid's 23. The hybrid's real gain is torque — 465 lb-ft against 317.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER
Which trims have a locker and the sway-bar disconnect?

The electronic rear locker comes on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter; other trims get a limited-slip rear differential. The disconnecting front anti-roll bar is standard on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter and optional on the TRD Off-Road.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER
Does it still have KDSS?

No. Car and Driver confirms KDSS is gone, replaced by the electronic front bar disconnect, and Wikipedia notes that from 2025 KDSS is exclusive to Lexus.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER / WIKIPEDIA
How much can it tow?

6,000 lb, hybrid or not — 1,000 lb more than the 5th gen.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER
What fuel economy and range should I expect?

EPA: up to 20 city / 26 highway / 22 combined for the gas truck (21 combined in 4WD), 23 combined for the hybrid. Car and Driver's 4WD Limited returned 21 mpg on its 75-mph highway test; its Trailhunter averaged 17 mpg. Owners complain about range, with one reporting about 280 miles between fill-ups.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER / 4RUNNER6G.COM
Is the transmission overheating issue real?

Car and Driver saw the eight-speed's temperatures approach the red zone after repeated acceleration runs, and some owners report warnings on long, slow off-road climbs. Owners' advice: use 4Lo at low speeds or hold a lower gear in S mode, and report it to Toyota if it happens.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER / 4RUNNER6G.COM
What are the oil change and fluid intervals?

Oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months, or 5,000 miles / 6 months if mostly on dirt or dusty roads; differential oil at 15,000-mile intervals under severe use. Owners cite 5.9 qt of engine oil, about 1.4 qt front and 5.9 qt rear diff oil (6.9 qt on the Trailhunter), and 1.2–1.5 qt in the transfer case.

SOURCE · 4RUNNER6G.COM MAINTENANCE CHART
Can I get a third row?

Only on the SR5 and non-hybrid Limited, and Car and Driver describes the rearmost seats as little more than floor-mounted jump seats. The hybrid's battery lives under the cargo floor, so no hybrid gets a third row.

SOURCE · CAR AND DRIVER
What lift options are there yet?

The aftermarket moved quickly: leveling and lift kits from ReadyLift and TORQ, Total Chaos kits with King shocks, Dirt King coilovers, plus upper control arms from Total Chaos, Peak and Westcott. Forum members are still waiting for news of an OEM TRD lift.

SOURCE · 4RUNNER LIFESTYLE / 4RUNNER6G.COM
Did it keep the roll-down rear window?

Yes. Wikipedia notes the engineers kept it by evaluating every component of the mechanism and trimming weight where they could.
