G55 AMG problems: 8 things to check
The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.
G55 AMG problems to check before you buy
- Is it really an AMG?Plenty of G 500s and G 550s have been dressed as AMGs. Check the VIN and the data card, not the badges.
- Naturally aspirated or supercharged?US 2002–2004 trucks are naturally aspirated; 2005–2011 are Kompressors. Make sure the model year, VIN and engine all match the price.
- Heat soak and the intercooler pumpOn a Kompressor, ask when the intercooler pump was replaced. A truck that pulls hard when cold and goes flat when hot is the classic symptom.
- Listen at idleVibration or an RPM-dependent chirp on the M113 points to the harmonic balancer. Don't drive far on a failing one.
- Mounts and suspensionCommenters on German Cars For Sale Blog advise checking engine and transmission mounts and suspension wear. With 700 Nm going through them, mounts wear out faster.
- Test all three lockersEngage the centre, rear and front locks on loose ground. Lockers that 'were never used' by the last owner often don't work.
- Rust, even on the fancy oneOwners warn G 55s rust like any G, especially near the coast. Check the tailgate's lower edge, door bottoms, sills and rear frame tubes.
- Gear oil behind the front wheelsOil on the inner wheels or the large AMG calipers means front axle seals, and possibly contaminated brakes.
The repairs G55 AMG owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intercooler pump (Kompressor) | Power drops after heat soak, especially in traffic or at crawling speed; intake temperatures climb. | 2 / 5 | 1–2 hours | Parts plus labor |
| Harmonic balancer (M113) | Vibration at idle, a wobbling crank pulley, cracked or bulging rubber, chirp or rattle that changes with RPM. If the outer ring lets go you lose the belt drive. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 2.5 hours | Parts plus labor |
| Engine & transmission mounts | Clunk on take-off or shifts, extra vibration in the cabin, engine movement when you blip the throttle. | 2 / 5 | Half a day | Parts plus labor |
| Spark plugs, wires & coils | Misfire codes, rough idle, hesitation under boost. Many owners don't know when the plugs were last done. | 2 / 5 | 2–3 hours | Parts plus labor |
| 722.6 service & 13-pin connector | Harsh or delayed shifts, limp mode, or ATF wicking into the wiring at the gearbox connector. | 2 / 5 | 2–3 hours | Parts plus labor |
| Diff locks won't engage | One or all locks refuse to engage or drop out. On mid-2000s W463s the centre lock is vacuum-operated and the axle locks hydraulic, so one vacuum leak can disable the whole sequence. | 2 / 5 | An afternoon | Diagnosis-dependent |
| Front axle seal leak | Gear oil on the inner front wheels, a gear-oil smell, oil on the caliper or rotor, brakes pulling. | 3 / 5 | A day | $600–1,500 |
| Steering damper & front-end wander | Wander and wheel shake at 55–70 mph, vague on-centre feel, front-end clunks. On a 500 hp truck you'll notice it quickly. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 1 hour | $300–800 |

Years with known problems
| YEARS | FLAG | WHAT TO KNOW |
|---|---|---|
| 2002–04 | Beware | Early US trucks share the G 500's electrical gremlins (seat motors, window regulators, door-lock actuators). Handsome Motors says they were mostly gone by 2005–06; CarGurus counts early G 55s among the least reliable US Gs |

Owner questions about G55 AMG reliability
Is the G 55 reliable?
The frame, axles and V8 are strong. Common jobs are predictable: the intercooler pump on Kompressors, the harmonic balancer, mounts, front axle seals, the steering damper and locker vacuum lines. One owner commenting on German Cars For Sale Blog calls the windshield a consumable. Buy on service records, not low mileage. On 2002–04 trucks, also test every window, lock and seat. Handsome Motors says those early electrical gremlins were mostly gone by 2005–06.
