G55 AMG years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
In the US, 2002–2004 G 55s are naturally aspirated (349 hp) and 2005–2011 are Kompressors (469 hp, later 493 and 500 hp). In Europe the supercharger arrived in 2004.

G55 AMG year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 1999 | — | G 55 AMG debuts in Europe with the naturally aspirated 5.4-litre M113, 354 hp |
| 2002 | — | US launch (MY2002) alongside the G 500 as Mercedes-Benz USA takes over from Europa; 349 hp, 722.6 five-speed |
| 2002–04 | Beware | Early US trucks share the G 500's electrical gremlins (seat motors, window regulators, door-lock actuators). Handsome Motors says they were mostly gone by 2005–06; CarGurus counts early G 55s among the least reliable US Gs |
| 2005 | — | Supercharged M113K Kompressor (US MY2005), 469 hp; 500-unit G 500 / G 55 Grand Edition built for the US |
| 2007 | — | Power up to 500 PS (MY2007 in the US); HID headlamps, reversing camera and TPMS arrive for the range. G 55 keeps the 722.6 five-speed |
| 2009 | — | 507 PS; three-fin grille, KOMPRESSOR lettering, titanium-grey wheels and 275/55R19 tires |
| 2011 | — | Last US model year for the G 55 |
| 2012 | — | Replaced by the biturbo G 63 AMG (MY2013 in the US) |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
