Timing belt on the 2.3 and 2.6 fours

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME A dayCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

None until it fails. A truck without a belt receipt is due.

The fix, step by step

  1. Disconnect the battery, drain the coolant and remove the fan, drive belts and crankshaft pulley, then the timing covers.
  2. Set the engine to top dead center and line up the cam and crank timing marks before you loosen anything.
  3. Fit the new belt and tensioner, check the marks again after turning the engine over twice by hand, and replace the cam and crank seals if they're weeping.
  4. Many owners do the water pump at the same time.
