Replace stripped or broken wheel studs

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME An afternoonCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Lug nuts that won't thread on, studs that snap when a tire shop uses an impact gun, or a wheel that loosens. Owners have reported all three to NHTSA.

The fix, step by step

  1. Support the truck safely and pull the wheel.
  2. On the front, remove the caliper and rotor to reach the back of the hub; on the rear, pull the drum.
  3. Drive out the damaged stud, clean the hub, then draw the new stud in with a stack of washers and a lug nut, or press it in, until the head seats fully.
  4. Fit new lug nuts with any damaged studs, start every nut by hand and torque them to the factory spec in a star pattern.
  5. Tell your tire shop to do the same.
