DIY repair · Isuzu Trooper (first generation)

Automatic transmission service (and the 90V167 recall check)

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME An hour or twoCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Late or harsh shifts, a fluid smell or smoke from the exhaust manifold. On 1990–91 automatics, overfilled fluid could escape onto the exhaust (recall 90V167).

The fix, step by step

  1. Drop the pan, replace the filter and gasket, and refill with the specified fluid.
  2. Check the level exactly as the manual describes and do not overfill.
  3. Confirm with an Isuzu or Chevrolet dealer, or the NHTSA VIN lookup, that the recall work was done.

Tools & part numbers

  • Drain pan
  • socket set
  • torque wrench
  • funnel
  • Dexron-III-type ATF (Liqui Moly lookup; it lists ≈4.5 L for the 1990–92 2.6 automatic).
