Front CV boots and axles

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME Half a day per sideCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Grease flung around the inside of the wheel, or a click on full lock under power.

The fix, step by step

  1. Support the truck, pull the wheel and the hub, disconnect the lower ball joint or knuckle as the manual describes, and slide the axle out of the differential.
  2. Either rebuild the joint with a new boot, clamps and grease, or fit a complete replacement axle.
  3. Check the differential output seal while the axle is out.
