DIY repair · Suzuki Jimny JB23 / JB43

Replace the kingpin bearings and halfshaft seal

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day per sideCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Steering-wheel shake around 45–50 mph, play when you rock a raised wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock with the brakes held, and diff oil mixed with grease leaking from the swivel ball. A rusted-solid lower bearing can show no play at all.

The fix, step by step

  1. Strip the steering knuckle, replace both tapered kingpin bearings (BigJimny recommends Koyo, the OE supplier) and fit the 26 x 38 x 9 mm double-lip Suzuki halfshaft seal rather than a shallower aftermarket one.
  2. Pack the bearings with heavy-duty waterproof grease in normal quantities, use only a thin film of sealant on the kingpins, and add Suzuki's preload shims if the wobble persists.
  3. Replace the large swivel seal while you're in there.
