Points or tired electronic ignition → Pertronix

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST Module about $144.95–196; coil extra

Symptoms

Hard starting, misfires, burnt points, or a failing stock electronic module that's hard to find.

The fix, step by step

  1. Work out what you have first.
  2. Anything Scout sells three versions for V8 Scout IIs: 1971–75 points distributors, the 1975–77 'gold box' electronic system and the 1978–80 Prestolite electronic distributor.
  3. The first two install under the distributor cap.
  4. The 1978–80 Prestolite version needs the distributor removed, and Anything Scout says it must be used with a points-style coil, not the stock coil.
  5. Set the timing afterward.
  6. One Binder Planet owner's module and Flame-Thrower coil caught fire when a mechanic left the key on with the engine off for half an hour, so don't leave the ignition on.
