Front ball joints (Dana 30 / Dana 44)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A day for both sidesCOST About $157 per side (Spicer pair) or $49.95 per joint (Moog greaseable)

Symptoms

Wandering, clunks over bumps, uneven tire wear, and play at the top and bottom of the tire with the front end jacked up.

The fix, step by step

  1. Scout II Dana 30 and Dana 44 open-knuckle axles use the same ball joints: two upper and two lower per axle.
  2. They press into the knuckles, and the lowers have snap rings.
  3. Remove the wheel, caliper, locking hub, wheel bearings and spindle, then slide out the axle shaft.
  4. Unbolt the tie rod, separate the knuckle from the axle C, and press out the old joints with a ball-joint tool.
  5. Press in the new joints, reassemble, set the camber sleeve, and get the alignment checked.
  6. On the IH Parts America forum, one owner advises to buy good joints rather than doing the job twice.
