Front disc brakes, wheel bearings and seals

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A dayCOST About $350 for a complete front disc kit; wheel bearing kit $74.95

Symptoms

Pulling, a soft pedal, grinding, or play in the wheel. Even when new, the brakes were the weak point: Motor Sport's 1978 test said they tended to pull and twitch.

The fix, step by step

  1. Jack and support the front, remove the wheels, calipers and locking hubs, and take off the hub and rotor.
  2. Clean out the old grease, replace the inner seal, and repack or replace the bearings.
  3. Fit new rotors, pads and calipers, adjust the bearing preload with the spindle nuts, and bleed the brakes.
  4. Anything Scout's front kit covers 1974–80 Scout IIs with a Dana 44, and it notes that excessive lateral wheel movement means you need new bearings and seals.
  5. Do the rear drums at the same time.
