Floor pan and rocker replacement

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME Multi-weekend welding jobCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Soft or holed floors under the mats, rockers bubbling at the bottom of the doors, and daylight around the fuel-tank compartment. Silodrome warns that rust usually starts inside and works out.

The fix, step by step

  1. Strip the interior and measure everything before cutting.
  2. Cut out the rotten metal and fit replacement front floor halves (sold by side), the rear floor, and inner and outer rockers as needed, with the front floor X-brace if it's gone.
  3. Weld the panels in, seam-seal and paint.
  4. If the body is lifted or off, replace the body-mount bushings while you're there.

Tools & part numbers

  • MIG welder
  • cutoff wheel and spot-weld drill
  • clamps and self-tapping screws for fitting
  • seam sealer and weld-through primer.
