Swivel ball seal replacement and regrease

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME VariesCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Oil weeping from the swivel housings onto the chrome balls and wheels; the truck rolling while in park can mean a CV joint ran dry and failed.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove the bracket that retains the swivel seal on the back of the hub.
  2. Cut out the old seal (Dremel or heavy side cutters).
  3. Pull the spring from the new seal and cut the seal so it can be wrapped around the axle housing, then refit it with the cut at the top, rejoin the spring, and seal the cut with silicone.
  4. Let it cure for a day, drain the old oil, and refill the swivel with the correct Land Rover swivel grease.
  5. For peace of mind, strip and repack the CV joints too (owners estimate 3–4 hours).
