Heater core / blower motor (dash out)

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ 9–10 hours (owners report about 12 book hours)COST Core about $150 (as reported by owners); labor is the cost

Symptoms

No heat, a sweet smell or fogged windows (core), or a dead or noisy blower — Atlantic British suggests replacing the blower around 150,000 miles.

The fix, step by step

  1. Disconnect the battery and note the radio code.
  2. Drain the coolant, remove both front doors, the left footwell panels, the dash fascia, the instrument panel, the radio surround and the dash top.
  3. Lower the A/C unit without discharging it.
  4. Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall and remove the four heater-box bolts.
  5. Split the box, swap the core (owners recommend the all-metal type) and/or the blower, test before reassembly, then refill and bleed the cooling system.
