Coolant crossover pipe, water pump & thermostat (5.0 V8)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 1 day DIY (pump and both pipes)COST One owner's dealer bill for pump, front and rear manifolds, hoses and belts on a 2015: $5,500

Symptoms

Coolant smell after driving, slowly falling coolant level or 'low coolant' warning, crusty coolant around the front of the engine or the back of the block, rising temperature under load.

The fix, step by step

  1. Drain the coolant.
  2. Remove the engine covers and air intake to reach the front crossover (water pump outlet to block, LR018275) and the rear heater manifold.
  3. Pull the pipes and make sure no broken pipe ends or O-rings stay behind in the block.
  4. Clean the ports, fit new O-rings lubricated with coolant (not grease), and seat the new pipes squarely.
  5. Owners warn against cheap copies and fit genuine or aluminium parts.
  6. Replace the water pump and thermostat while you're in there, then refill with the correct 50/50 coolant and bleed the system.
