Automatic transmission fluid & pan/filter service

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2–4 hoursCOST About C$1,000 at a shop per LandRoverWorld; kits $279 (six-speed) and $578 (eight-speed) at Lucky8

Symptoms

Harsh or flared shifts, judder, a weeping pan or valve-body sleeve. The handbook calls the fluid 'filled for life', but owners and specialists change it.

The fix, step by step

  1. 2010–2013 trucks use a ZF six-speed with a plastic pan and integral filter; 2014–2016 trucks use the ZF 8HP70, whose LR065238 pan also carries the filter.
  2. Drain, drop the pan, replace the valve-body sleeve on six-speeds, fit the new pan, then follow the factory fill-and-level procedure, which is done at a specified fluid temperature.
  3. Several six-speed owners have switched to a steel pan with a separate filter to make future services easier.

Tools & part numbers

  • Torx and sockets, fluid pump, scan tool to read fluid temperature
  • pan with filter, sleeve, ZF-spec fluid
