Front lower control arms and bushes

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME 45 min per side on a lift; a full day if bolts are seizedCOST One owner was quoted $1,400 for both arms plus alignment

Symptoms

Clunks, vague steering, tyre wear, split boots and oil leaking from the hydraulic rear bush.

The fix, step by step

  1. Soak the fixings for days beforehand.
  2. Many bolts come out with heat or a drift; seized ones are cut with a reciprocating saw and carbide blades, which is why Lucky8 sells arm kits with new hardware.
  3. You may need a puller to push the drive shaft back through the hub.
  4. Fit the new arms or bushes and get an alignment straight away; one owner warns a badly misaligned truck can drop to its bump stops on the way to the shop, and a restart pumps it back up.
