H55F five-speed swap

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ A weekend; the pilot bearing took Off-Road.com's author a full dayCOST Parts plus labor; flywheel resurfacing about $30

Symptoms

About 3,250 rpm at 75 mph in fourth gear.

The fix, step by step

  1. On post-4/1985 trucks the H55F is direct-fit.
  2. Drain and remove the driveshafts, starter, clutch slave and transfer-case shift lever, support the engine and drop the four-speed.
  3. Replace the clutch, pilot bearing and rear main seal, resurface the flywheel, then fit the H55F with its fifth-gear oiler, plug the crossbar hole in the transfer case and use new gaskets and staked nuts.
  4. Pre-4/1985 trucks also need shift-linkage and driveshaft changes.
  5. The 0.84 fifth drops highway rpm to about 2,750 at 75 mph.
