Carburetor rebuild and vacuum check

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A dayCOST About $300 for a rebuild (Corsetti)

Symptoms

Stumbling, hesitation, sputtering, rough running or stalling at low rpm. If it only runs with the choke off, suspect the EGR valve.

The fix, step by step

  1. Corsetti says the most frequent problem is simply a loose or broken vacuum hose or wiring connection, so check fuel and ignition basics, then every vacuum line, before blaming the carb.
  2. Rebuild the factory carburetor and check the EGR valve while you're there.
  3. Above 3,930 feet, check the High Altitude Compensation system, which a Weber carb bypasses.
  4. Trucks over 200,000 miles will likely need a full set of vacuum hoses.
