Symptoms
The rear glass won't go up or down from the dash switch or the key. It may work only with the tailgate down. Or you hear the motor clunk while the glass stays put.
The fix, step by step
- IH8MUD members work from the simple stuff inwards.
- The tailgate has a safety switch: the motor won't run unless its plunger is pushed in.
- Slop in the gate or a broken plastic actuator can leave the switch open.
- Next, check the power strip and the harness where it flexes at the hinge; one owner found his strip 'rotten' and replaced it.
- A meter will tell you whether power reaches the motor when you press the dash switch.
- If the motor runs on direct battery power but the glass doesn't move, suspect a stripped regulator gear.
- Members say the glass tray has to be separated from the regulator by driving out two clips, and that the mechanism is often packed with old grime.
- Be gentle with the glass: one owner broke a donor truck's window getting it down.
