Suzuki LJ Jimny problems: 7 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Suzuki Jimny LJ series, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Suzuki LJ Jimny problems to check before you buy

  1. Rust in sills, corner posts and floorsThese are 45- to 55-year-old steel bodies. LJ80 specialist LJ80.de stocks repair panels for the corner posts, sills, side panels and footwell floors, which hints at where they rot. Probe those areas and the frame before anything else. On one BaT 1972 LJ20, the battery tray had a patch panel and rust.
  2. Which LJ is it really?Engines were swapped and bodies updated. The LJ10 has an air-cooled twin and a horizontal-slat grille. The LJ20 has a water-cooled twin and a vertical grille. The LJ50 has a three-cylinder two-stroke, and the LJ80 has a four-stroke four. Count the cylinders and check the cooling system.
  3. Two-stroke healthOn LJ10, LJ20 and LJ50 trucks, a two-stroke that won't idle or smokes heavily may need a full rebuild, and engine parts are scarcer than for the LJ80. Ask what has been done and how the engine is lubricated confirm in manual.
  4. Leaf springs and bushingsSagging springs and perished bushings are normal at this age. LJ80.de still sells complete front and rear LJ80 spring sets, bushing kits and shackle plates, so it's fixable.
  5. Brakes are drums all roundEvery LJ has four-wheel drum brakes. Check for seized wheel cylinders, a leaking master cylinder and contaminated shoes before driving one anywhere.
  6. Title and import paperworkSuzuki didn't sell the LJ in the US itself; LJ20s came in through an independent importer as the Brute. Most US trucks are later imports, like the LJ20 on BaT that was sold new in Australia. Make sure the title and import paperwork match the chassis.
  7. Originality affects valueOriginal LJ10 and LJ20 trucks are rare. BaT results show restored LJ20s and early Jimnys selling at about $10,000–11,500, ahead of rougher examples.
