Range Rover P38 years to avoid, and the best years to buy

Every Land Rover Range Rover P38A model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.

The short answer

Hagerty's advice is to buy on condition and specification rather than age, adding that the electrical faults that dogged these trucks are now understood and fixable. ReRev says 1998 drew the most complaints of any Range Rover year on CarComplaints. Mid-1999-on V8s have Bosch Motronic instead of GEMS, but no guide we found says that alone makes them the better buy; cooling-system history matters more.

YEARVERDICTWHAT CHANGED
1994—Launched 28 September 1994. Rover V8 4.0 and 4.6 with Lucas GEMS management, BMW 2.5 turbo-diesel outside the US, five-height electronic air suspension and an electrically shifted BorgWarner 4462 transfer box.
1995—First US model year. The 4.0 gets rear-only traction control and a 2-pin rear diff; the 4.6 comes only with the ZF 4HP24 auto and has a 4-pin rear diff and four-wheel traction control.
1998—Land Rover 50th Anniversary edition shown at the Toronto show in February. Diesels gain EGR, a plastic inlet manifold and a MAF sensor (post-1998 engines).
1999—Bosch Motronic (from the BMW E38 7 Series) replaces GEMS mid-year, with revised engine mounts and a structural alloy sump. Later trucks get four-wheel traction control across the range.
2001—Production ends; the L322 replaces it.
2002—Last US model year.

“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
