Discovery 2 years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Land Rover Discovery Series II model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
There isn't an agreed best year. Wikipedia notes early Td5s (1998–2000) suffered oil-pump-drive and head-stud failures that were fixed within two years. In the US, an Expedition Portal buying guide says 2003–04 trucks were the worst for cracked oil pumps and more prone to loose liners, and a LandRoverForums thread gives the 2003–04 4.6 the worst reputation, though other owners there still vote for the 2004 for its facelift and diff-lock lever. Whatever the year, buy the one with head-gasket, cooling and chassis receipts.

Discovery 2 year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | — | Series II launched in the autumn: Td5 diesel and 4.0 'Thor' V8, optional SLS and ACE; centre diff lock fitted but no lever |
| 1999 MY | — | US sales begin, 4.0 V8 automatic only |
| 1998–2000 | Beware | Early Td5 oil-pump drive and head-stud ('head shuffle') problems, fixed within two years; ACE pipe and idler-pulley recalls |
| 2002 | — | Td5 moves to Euro 3 (15P) with EGR and better low-speed throttle response |
| 2003 MY | — | Facelift (D2a): pocketed headlamps, new rear lamps, CDL lever back as an option; US trucks get the 4.6 V8 |
| 2003 | — | 62 Discovery 2s prepared for the first G4 Challenge (Las Vegas and Moab stage) |
| 2003–04 | Beware | US owners report slipped and cracked liners on late 4.0 and especially 4.6 blocks |
| 2003–04 | — | UK run-out 'Definitive Editions': Pursuit, Landmark and ES Premium |
| 2004 | — | Final trucks leave Solihull in late May; Discovery 3 (LR3) takes over |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
