200 Series Land Cruiser years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
Unsealed 4X4 says many buyers see 2012–15 as the sweet spot: updated over the early trucks, but before the DPF that arrived on diesels in late 2015. On IH8MUD, owners point US shoppers to 2013–15 trucks, which have taken most of the depreciation, while 2016–21 add the eight-speed and more safety kit (one owner adds that the eight-speed didn't improve fuel economy much). Unsealed's last word applies everywhere: service history matters more than the model year.

200 Series Land Cruiser year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | — | 200 Series launches in the US (production from September 2007) with the 5.7 L 3UR-FE V8 and 6-speed automatic, KDSS, CRAWL control and a new, stronger frame |
| 2008–2011 | Recall | Model years covered by the floor-mat pedal and TPMS recalls |
| 2013 | Sweet spot | First facelift (released December 2011): previously optional kit made standard; Multi-Terrain Select, Multi-Terrain Monitor, Off-Road Turn Assist and Trailer Sway Control added. Unsealed 4X4 calls 2012–15 the sweet spot for many buyers, and IH8MUD owners point US shoppers to 2013–15 trucks |
| 2015–16 | Beware | Diesel markets only: the late-2015 facelift adds a DPF to the 1VD-FTV V8. Unsealed 4X4 reports DPF trouble and a Toyota recall on 2015–16 diesels. US petrol trucks never had a DPF |
| 2016 | — | Second facelift: 8-speed automatic, larger front brakes, 3.30:1 axle ratio in place of 3.90:1, new nose and tail lights, bigger screens |
| 2018–2019 | Recall | Model years covered by the Denso fuel-pump recall |
| 2020 | — | Heritage Edition for the FJ40's 60th anniversary: 1,200 built for the 2020 model year, five seats, US only |
| 2021 | — | Final US model year; the 300 Series is not sold in North America, and the nameplate returns on the smaller 250 for 2024 |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
