Mercedes 500 GE problems: 8 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Mercedes 500 GE problems to check before you buy

  1. Prove it's a real 500 GECheck the VIN and the factory data card. Genuine trucks are W463 long-wheelbase V8s in Amethyst Blue Metallic with black/grey leather. Commenters on one US listing questioned whether an M117 was correct, so make sure the engine is original rather than a transplant.
  2. AMG 6.0 claims need paperworkRM Sotheby's points out that pre-merger AMG conversions are hard to verify and lookalikes exist. Look for option code ZB6 ("500 GE (AMG)") on the data card and factory documents before paying a 6.0 premium.
  3. Don't panic about the front lockerThere isn't one. The 500 GE was built with centre and rear locks only. Test that both engage and show on the dash.
  4. Import and title paperworkNone were sold new in the US. American trucks came in privately: one documented example was cleared through Wallace test labs in 2005 at considerable cost. Make sure the title, import and compliance documents match the VIN.
  5. Fuel deliveryOwner records on surviving trucks show fuel pumps, the fuel accumulator and filters being replaced. Ask when that was done, and expect to do it on a truck that has sat.
  6. Front axle oilGear oil on the inside of the front wheels or on the brakes means axle seals. Even a low-mileage collector truck sold by RM Sotheby's needed a front-axle oil leak fixed during recommissioning.
  7. Binding in tight turnsA truck that binds or hops in tight U-turns on pavement may simply have a lock engaged. If it's unlocked and still binds, suspect the CV joints or transfer case, as one seller did, and price the repair.
  8. Rust in the usual placesTailgate lower edge, door bottoms, sills, rear frame tubes and strut mounts. A rust-free original body matters more on a 446-unit truck than on any other G.
