Service the 4L30-E automatic

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME A couple of hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Slipping, harsh or delayed shifts, or a fluid leak. Low fluid is the usual cause of failures, according to Bob Is The Oil Guy owners.

The fix, step by step

  1. Find and fix any leaks first: the accumulator cover and the drain bolt are known spots.
  2. Drop the pan, replace the filter and gasket, and refill to the exact level the manual specifies.
  3. The gearbox is very sensitive to fill volume.
  4. If the history is unknown, do a few partial fluid changes rather than a pressure flush.
