Front lower control arms (clunk fix)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME VariesCOST Around £700 fitted for the common arm pair (PistonHeads); arms from about $290 a pair aftermarket, $785 genuine, $489 polybushed

Symptoms

Knocks or clunks from the front over broken surfaces and under moderate braking; vague steering; uneven tyre wear.

The fix, step by step

  1. First run the VIN for the 2014–2017 front-knuckle recall, because a cracking upper knuckle joint can also make noises and is fixed free by dealers.
  2. If the knuckles are clear, support the truck on stands, remove the wheel, unbolt the lower arm from the knuckle and the subframe, swap in the new arm, and do the final bush torque with the suspension at ride height.
  3. Recalibrate the ride height if a height sensor was disturbed, then align.
