5.0 V8 timing chains, guides and tensioners

DIFFICULTY 5 / 5TIME Varies — a shop jobCOST About CA$4,500–7,500 at a specialist; genuine 34-piece kit $1,599

Symptoms

A rattle for a second or two on a cold start, later joined by cam-timing codes P0016, P0017, P0018 or P0019.

The fix, step by step

  1. Lock the engine at the correct position with the JLR timing tools before anything comes apart.
  2. Replace both cam chains, the tensioners and blades, both guides, the auxiliary drive chain with its tensioner and guide, and the cam lubricating jets, then refit with new rocker-cover gaskets and spark-plug seals.
  3. Don't reuse old tensioners or guides: reusing tired parts is the shortcut that brings the truck back on a hook.
