Symptoms
Oil dripping from the case or the output seals, a low fluid level, or a chain that has worn noisy. One forum veteran says the 203 is 'perfectly adequate and strong if the chain and sprockets are not worn out'.
The fix, step by step
- Torque King's Dodge transfer case chart, compiled from factory shop manuals, calls for SAE 10W-30 engine oil in the 1974–79 Ramcharger's NP203, with a capacity of 9 pints.
- Drain it, check the magnet and fluid for metal, and refill to the fill plug.
- If it's weeping, reseal the case with a gasket and seal kit, following the factory shop manual.
- A bearing kit is available if the case comes apart.
- If it seeps after a switch to synthetic oil, Torque King points out that old seals may not like the additives, so reseal it first.
