Symptoms
A front differential that keeps running low, or gear oil working its way out toward the steering knuckles.
The fix, step by step
- Remove the front hubs and spindles and pull the axle shafts, then remove the old inner seals from the axle tubes.
- Torque King's application chart lists the seals by build date.
- Trucks from 1974 to early 1977 (axle BOM 603036, and 603790 on the W100) use seal QU40055.
- Late-1977 to 1980 Ramchargers and Trail Dusters use QU40159.
- Use an installer that sets each seal to the correct depth.
- Torque King's adjustable tool also lets you move the seal lip onto an unworn part of the shaft.
- Refill the differential and check the knuckle seals and bearings while everything is apart.
