Symptoms
Not a fault, just a choice. Owners convert for less driveline drag and wear on the road. Ramcharger Central is split: some say the fuel savings don't justify it, and others just leave the case in High Loc.
The fix, step by step
- Mile Marker's 203 Conversion Kit (PN 501) replaces the NP203's internal differential parts with a wedged-gear assembly, so the case works like a part-time unit.
- It installs with common tools, according to Mile Marker.
- Pull the case, follow the kit instructions and reseal it as you go.
- Then decide what to do with the front axle.
- SuperBurban says a full-time axle can stay as it is and simply turn with the front driveshaft.
- If you add locking hubs, remember that the 203's park pawl needs the front axle engaged, so fit drive flanges or leave the hubs locked.
- One forum veteran calls hub conversions for half-ton Dodges expensive and not very strong.
- Swapping in a 1981-or-later front axle is the alternative.
