Transfer-case output seals

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a dayCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Oil on the transmission-mounted handbrake drum, a handbrake that won't hold, or drips from the transfer flanges.

The fix, step by step

  1. Old Patrols commonly blow their transfer-case front or rear output seals, according to SNLC, and if the rear one goes, it destroys the handbrake.
  2. Drop the driveshaft, remove the flange nut and flange, and replace the seal.
  3. He found Nissan's OEM seals were double-lipped and much better than the single-lip aftermarket seals in his truck.
  4. If the handbrake drum or band lining is oil-soaked, clean or reline it at the same time.
