Rear axle shaft bearing

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day per sideCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Gear oil on the rear brake shoes, a rumble from one rear wheel, or axle end-play.

The fix, step by step

  1. SNLC says the rear wheel bearing on the 60 isn't shimmed for preload.
  2. It's preset by the spacer under the bearing and bearing cage, which is why the nut must be torqued properly: 157 ft-lb in the early manual and over 200 ft-lb in late-1970s manuals.
  3. Pull the shaft (it needs the right puller to leave the bearing cage), press the bearing off and the new one on with a drift or pipe, with the wheel studs fitted first.
  4. Then shim the shaft for factory end-play.
  5. He made his own socket for the bearing nut.
