Drum brake overhaul

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A dayCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Pulling, a low or spongy pedal, seized adjusters or wheel cylinders on a truck that has been parked.

The fix, step by step

  1. Strip each drum, clean and inspect the shoes and drums, and replace wheel cylinders and hardware.
  2. SNLC found seized rear adjuster pistons and trashed rear backing plates on his 1964, and none of four master cylinders were usable until one was bored and sleeved in stainless.
  3. Fit new flexible hoses, bleed the system and adjust the shoes.
  4. Many owners have added vacuum assist; check that any conversion was done properly.
