DIY repair · Nissan Patrol 60 Series

Reseal the P-series six

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ A day for valve cover, sump and manifold gasketsCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Oil weeping from the rocker cover, sump or manifold joints, or a tired head gasket on a high-mileage engine.

The fix, step by step

  1. RockAuto lists gasket sets for the 1967 Patrol 4.0 (head gasket set, valve-cover, sump, intake/exhaust manifold and full engine sets), so routine resealing is easy.
  2. Clean the mating faces, use new gaskets, and torque in the sequence from the workshop manual.
  3. When SNLC rebuilt a 1964's P engine, he also rebuilt the single-barrel Hitachi carburettor with a quality kit; do the carb at the same time if it's leaking or flooding.
