Valley coolant leak (heat-exchanger cover)

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME A long weekendCOST FIPG sealant and two union-pipe O-rings, plus a lot of labor if a shop does it

Symptoms

Pink coolant dripping from the top of the transmission hump at the back of the engine, with the water pump area dry.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove the plastic intake runners and intake to expose the engine valley.
  2. Remove the aluminum heat-exchanger cover, clean both surfaces and reseal with grey FIPG.
  3. Replace the union pipe and both of its O-rings while you're in there.
  4. One IH8MUD member called it "a PHH job on FZJs on steroids": nothing technical, just a lot of hard-to-reach bolts.
