Parking brake that won't hold

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ An hour to adjust; half a day for shoes and hardwareCOST Free to adjust; shoes, struts and hardware if worn

Symptoms

The handbrake won't hold the truck on a slope, or the lever comes up a long way before it bites.

The fix, step by step

  1. Unsealed 4X4 blames four things: poor adjustment, poor maintenance, worn 'dog bones' (the shoe struts) and the lever design.
  2. Check the lining on the small shoes inside the rear disc hats before you adjust anything.
  3. Adjust the shoes at the drum first, then the cable at the lever.
  4. Upgrades include longer dog bones for more shoe contact, and lever kits that move the pivot point to pull more cable.
  5. Unsealed admits no fix lasts forever, so chock the wheels on steep camp sites anyway.
