Rear crossmember and outrigger repair

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME A weekend or moreCOST Panels are cheap; welding is the bill

Symptoms

Flaking or perforated steel at the rear crossmember, soft outriggers, fresh underseal hiding something.

The fix, step by step

  1. Clean back to bare metal and assess.
  2. Outriggers and rear crossmembers are bolt-on or weld-in replacement sections; cut out the rotten section, fit the new one square to the frame and seam-weld it, then protect the inside of the box sections.
  3. If the main rails are thin as well, a galvanised replacement chassis is the permanent answer.
