Leaf spring and chassis bush replacement

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME A weekend for all four springsCOST Parts plus your patience

Symptoms

Clonks over bumps, the truck leaning or sitting low, cracked or perished bushes, or you're fitting parabolics.

The fix, step by step

  1. Take the springs and shackles off first, then deal with the chassis bushes.
  2. Rovers North members drive the old bush out with an air chisel and a worn socket the size of the outer shell, or burn the rubber out with a MAPP torch once the bolt is free, then cut the remaining shell lengthwise with a reciprocating saw from the inside out without cutting the frame.
  3. Fit new bushes and springs following the workshop manual.
