Clutch cross-shaft pins

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME A day with the floor outCOST Pins and bushes are cheap; a seized pin can mean gearbox removal

Symptoms

Clutch pedal suddenly stops a quarter to a third of the way down and the clutch won't disengage, while the hydraulics still work through their full stroke when disconnected.

The fix, step by step

  1. Disconnect the slave push rod and work the pedal to confirm the master and slave are fine.
  2. Lift the floor panels to reach the cross-shaft, check the pins, coupling tube and spherical bushes, then replace sheared pins (one Rovers North contributor recommends hardened pins), a coupling with elongated holes, and worn bushes.
  3. In one reported case a sheared pin was seized in the shaft and the transmission had to come out.
