Symptoms
Screaming highway rpm on 33s with a 1:1 top gear.
The fix, step by step
- The H55F five-speed has a 0.845:1 fifth and a much deeper first.
- On 1975–80 FJ40s with a four-speed, the IH8MUD guide lists floor and transmission-cover changes, a custom crossmember, transfer-case shift linkage and boot, driveshaft length changes, speedometer cable and parking-brake work.
- Early three-speed trucks also need a bellhousing and frame-crossmember changes.
- Fit an oiler for fifth gear: Cruiser Corps says the H55F needs a split transfer case built 10/1982 or later, which has the oiler provision.
