Repair a cracked rear spring hanger

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ A day, with weldingCOST Parts plus fabrication labor

Symptoms

A clunk from the rear under heavy load, such as towing up a hill, and a wandering feel in corners if the crack has grown.

The fix, step by step

  1. Unsealed's order: have the crack professionally welded, add chassis bracing straight away from someone who's very good with a MIG, then fit the GVM upgrade the truck should have had in the first place.
  2. After that, check the area at every service.

Tools & part numbers

  • Welder and grinder (or a fab shop)
  • bracing plates
  • GVM-rated springs.
