Timing belt, water pump and thermostat (the 90k service)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A long weekend (one owner logged about 15 relaxed hours)COST About $600 in parts for one IH8MUD owner's full kit

Symptoms

No symptoms until it breaks. It's on the service schedule at 90,000 miles, so a truck without receipts is due.

The fix, step by step

  1. Drain the coolant, cover the radiator with cardboard, then remove the fan, belts and crank pulley.
  2. You'll need a big wrench, a cheater bar and something to hold the crank.
  3. Replace the timing belt, tensioner and idlers, the water pump with its gasket and O-ring, the thermostat and gasket, and ideally the cam and crank seals while you're in there.
  4. One IH8MUD write-up recommends taking photos and bagging bolts as you go, and finds the factory manual a general guide rather than a step-by-step.
