Replace the heater-hose pipe tees

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hourCOST Under $15 in parts; a dealer charges $100–200+

Symptoms

None until a brittle tee cracks and you lose coolant, possibly a long way from home.

The fix, step by step

  1. With the engine cold, remove the engine cover and lean in from the side.
  2. The tees sit deep in the engine bay, so expect a long reach.
  3. Unclip the ground wire attached to the heater hose, work the clamps off with pliers, pull the hoses (soapy water helps), fit new tees and refill the coolant.
  4. Replace both, because the hot side fails first.
