Tighten up sloppy steering

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5 (rag joint) · 3 / 5 (box seals)TIME ≈ 1–2 hours (rag joint) · a day (box reseal)COST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Free play at the wheel, a clunk when you turn, power-steering fluid weeping from the box.

The fix, step by step

  1. Have a helper rock the wheel while you watch the rag joint, the steering-box input and the linkage.
  2. A torn rag joint shows movement between the column and the box; replace it, or fit a complete coupler.
  3. If the box leaks, reseal it with the seal kits or replace it.
  4. Check tie-rod ends and the drag link while you're there.
