Rebuild the carburetor or convert to throttle-body injection

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5 (rebuild) · 3 / 5 (TBI)TIME ≈ An afternoon (rebuild) · a weekend (TBI)COST TBI conversion about $2,000 in parts plus up to $1,000 labor (Hagerty, Grand Wagoneer)

Symptoms

Stumbling or stalling cold or hot, hard hot starts, rich running, fuel smell.

The fix, step by step

  1. Rule out vacuum leaks and ignition faults first.
  2. Rebuild with the kit for your year and engine: the V8 two-barrel kit is listed for 1981–91 and the 4.2 kit for 1982–86.
  3. Fit a new base gasket and insulator, set the float and choke pull-off to the kit spec, and check timing with a light.
  4. Throttle-body injection replaces the carburetor and needs its own pump, return line and wiring; it's the most common long-term fix.
