Fix the power tailgate window

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 2–4 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

The rear glass won't drop, so the tailgate can't be opened, or the glass binds and stalls. On 1970–83 trucks the key switch could stick on (recall 87V-178).

The fix, step by step

  1. Test the dash switch and the key switch in the tailgate first.
  2. If the motor hums but nothing moves, lower the glass by hand, open the inner panel and inspect the lifter cushions, lifter bar and glass channels.
  3. Replace worn cushions and channels, lube the tracks, and fit a new switch kit if the old one is intermittent.
  4. Ask a dealer whether the recall work was ever done.
